A torque wrench is a precision tool, and treating it with care is essential for maintaining its accuracy. Follow these five tips to get the most out of your investment:

  1. Never Use It as a Breaker Bar: The internal mechanism is delicate. Always loosen fasteners with a standard wrench before using the torque wrench for the final tighten.

  2. Store at the Lowest Setting: Especially for click-type wrenches, always wind the torque setting back to its lowest value before storing. This relieves tension on the internal spring, preventing loss of calibration.

  3. Pull, Don't Push: Apply force by pulling the handle smoothly. Pushing can misalign the tool and lead to inaccurate readings. Use your hand on the grip, not a cheater bar.

  4. Respect the "Click": When you hear or feel the click, stop applying force immediately. Continuing to pull can damage the mechanism.

  5. Regular Calibration is Key: Accuracy drifts over time. For professional use, annual calibration is recommended. Serious DIY users should consider calibration every few years or after 5,000 cycles.

Proper maintenance ensures your torque wrench remains a reliable partner for years to come, protecting both your projects and your wallet.
