How to Properly Maintain Your Spare Tire for Emergencies

Many drivers focus solely on their four main tires and overlook the spare tire—until they’re stranded with a flat and realize the spare is unusable. Properly maintaining your spare tire is crucial for ensuring it’s ready to use in emergencies, and it also plays a role in overall tire protection (as a functional spare can prevent you from damaging a main tire further in a crisis).

First, know what type of spare tire you have. There are two common types: full-size spares and compact (or “donut”) spares. Full-size spares are identical to your main tires and can be used indefinitely, while compact spares are smaller, lighter, and designed for temporary use only (usually with a speed limit of 50 mph and a maximum distance of 70 miles). Understanding your spare’s limitations is key to using it safely.

Regardless of the type, check the spare tire’s pressure at least every six months. Compact spares often require higher pressure than main tires (sometimes up to 60 psi), so refer to the tire’s sidewall or your owner’s manual for the correct specification. A flat or underinflated spare is useless in an emergency, so regular pressure checks are non-negotiable.

Store the spare tire properly to prevent damage. Most spares are stored in the trunk (under a carpeted panel) or under the rear of the vehicle. If stored under the car, make sure the mounting hardware is tight to avoid the tire falling off while driving. Also, keep the spare clean and free from debris—dirt and moisture can cause rust (on the wheel) or dry rot (on the rubber) over time.

Finally, inspect the spare tire for signs of aging, such as cracks in the rubber or hardening of the tread. Even if it’s never been used, a spare tire older than 10 years should be replaced, as rubber degrades over time and loses its ability to handle the stress of driving. By maintaining your spare tire, you’ll be prepared for emergencies and avoid costly delays or further tire damage.
