Brake dust—tiny particles from worn brake pads—collects on tires over time. It’s not just unsightly; it can damage the rubber if left unchecked. Brake dust is acidic, and when it mixes with moisture (like rain or dew), it eats away at the tire’s surface, causing fading and small cracks.

Cleaning brake dust regularly is key. Use a dedicated brake dust cleaner (avoid harsh chemicals) and a soft brush. Spray the cleaner on the tire, let it sit for 1-2 minutes to break down the dust, then scrub gently. Rinse thoroughly with water—leftover cleaner can also damage rubber.

For hard-to-remove brake dust, mix baking soda and water into a paste. Apply it to the affected area, let it sit for 5 minutes, then scrub and rinse. Baking soda is mild and won’t harm the tire’s finish.

To prevent buildup, consider installing brake dust shields (available at auto parts stores). These plastic covers fit behind the wheel and catch dust before it reaches the tire. Also, have your brakes inspected if dust buildup is excessive—this could mean worn brake pads that need replacement. By keeping brake dust in check, you’ll keep your tires looking good and protect them from acid damage.
