Oil and grease leaks from your vehicle can spell trouble for your tires. These petroleum-based substances break down rubber, causing it to soften, crack, and lose its strength over time. Even small spills can lead to premature tire damage if not addressed quickly.

First, identify where leaks are coming from. Common sources include a faulty oil pan gasket, leaking valve cover, or worn brake lines. Fixing the leak at the source is the first step—otherwise, you’ll keep dealing with new stains on your tires.

If oil or grease gets on your tires, clean it off immediately. Use a mild dish soap mixed with warm water and a soft sponge. Avoid harsh degreasers—they can strip the tire’s protective coating and make the rubber more vulnerable to damage. Scrub gently to lift the stain, then rinse thoroughly with water.

After cleaning, dry the tire with a towel to prevent moisture from mixing with any remaining residue. For extra protection, apply a water-based tire conditioner—this adds a barrier that helps repel future oil or grease splatters. By staying on top of leaks and cleaning stains quickly, you’ll keep your tires’ rubber strong and durable.
