Using the wrong tire size (even slightly different from the manufacturer’s recommendation) hurts your tires and your vehicle. It can cause uneven wear, reduce traction, and even damage the suspension—all of which shorten tire life.

Tire size is specified by the vehicle’s maker for a reason: it’s designed to fit the wheel correctly, maintain proper clearance, and work with the suspension. For example, using a tire that’s too wide can rub against the wheel well, causing sidewall damage. A tire that’s too narrow won’t grip the road properly, leading to faster tread wear and increased risk of hydroplaning.

Wrong tire size also affects speedometer accuracy and tire pressure. A larger tire will make the speedometer read lower than your actual speed, while a smaller tire will make it read higher. This can lead to unintentional speeding, which increases tire heat and wear. Additionally, incorrect size tires may require different pressure settings—using the wrong pressure adds even more wear.

To find the right size, check your owner’s manual or the sticker inside the driver’s door jamb. When buying new tires, always choose the exact size recommended. If you want to change tire size (e.g., for off-roading), consult a professional first—they can ensure the new size is compatible with your vehicle.
