Torque Wrenches for Boat Maintenance: Fight Rust and Water Damage
Boats face unique challenges—saltwater, humidity, and constant vibration—so a torque wrench built for marine use is a must. Look for stainless steel components (resists rust) and a waterproof rating (IPX4 or higher).
Key tasks to torque:
· Propeller Nuts: 40–60 ft-lbs (varies by boat size) – Loose props cause engine damage; over-tightening breaks the prop shaft.
· Deck Hardware: 8–12 ft-lbs for cleats and railings – Saltwater loosens bolts over time; retorque every 3 months.
· Engine Mount Bolts: 25–35 ft-lbs – Vibration from the engine can loosen these, leading to misalignment.
After use, rinse the wrench with fresh water (avoid soaking) and dry with a cloth. Lubricate the drive end with marine-grade oil to prevent corrosion.
