Vehicle Hurts Tires

Every tire has a maximum load capacity (listed on the sidewall), but many drivers ignore this and overload their vehicles—whether hauling groceries, luggage, or heavy equipment. Overloading puts extra stress on tires, leading to serious damage and safety risks.

When you exceed the load capacity, tires flex more than they’re designed to. This causes excessive heat buildup inside the tire. Heat weakens the rubber and the internal structure (like belts and plies), making the tire more likely to blow out—especially at high speeds.

Overloading also leads to uneven tread wear. The extra weight presses the tire down harder, causing the tread to wear out faster, especially in the center. This reduces traction and shortens the tire’s lifespan.

To avoid overloading, check the tire’s load index (a number on the sidewall that corresponds to maximum weight) and your vehicle’s owner’s manual for load limits. Distribute weight evenly in the vehicle—don’t pile all heavy items on one side. If you need to haul a large load, consider using a trailer to take pressure off the vehicle’s tires.

Remember: even a little extra weight can add up. By staying within load limits, you’ll protect your tires and keep driving safe.
