Proper storage of winter tires during warm months ensures they’re in top condition when cold weather returns. Start by cleaning tires thoroughly to remove salt, dirt, and debris—residue can degrade rubber during storage. Dry tires completely to prevent mold or mildew. Deflate tires slightly (to 25 PSI) to reduce stress on sidewalls, but avoid full deflation. Store tires in a cool, dry, dark area (50-70°F) away from direct sunlight, heat sources, and ozone-producing devices (e.g., generators, motors), which accelerate rubber aging. For loose tires, stack them horizontally (max 4 high) or hang them on a tire rack—avoid standing them upright, as this causes sidewall deformation. For mounted tires, place them on a flat surface and rotate them monthly to prevent flat spots. Cover tires with a breathable fabric (not plastic, which traps moisture) to keep out dust. By following these storage tips, you protect winter tires from damage and ensure they perform reliably for seasons to come.
