5 Common Tire Pressure Gauge Mistakes (And How to Avoid Them)

Using a tire pressure gauge seems straightforward, but small mistakes can lead to inaccurate readings and compromised safety. Are you guilty of any of these common errors?

1. Using the Gauge on "Hot" Tires:
Driving heats up your tires and increases the air pressure inside. Always check your tires when they are cold for a reading that matches your vehicle's recommended PSI.

2. Not Checking the Gauge's Accuracy:
Gauges can drift out of calibration over time, especially if dropped. Test it against a known accurate gauge (e.g., at a gas station) occasionally.

3. Relying Solely on Your Vehicle's TPMS:
As we discussed, your car's Tire Pressure Monitoring System is a warning system, not a precision instrument. Use it as a backup, not a replacement for a manual check.

4. Forgetting the Valve Cap:
That little plastic cap isn't just for looks. It seals the valve mechanism, keeping out dirt and moisture that can cause leaks. Always screw it back on tightly.

5. Not Checking All Four Tires (Plus the Spare!):
Pressures can vary from tire to tire. Check all four regularly. And don't forget your spare! A flat spare tire is useless in an emergency.

Avoid these pitfalls, and you'll ensure your gauge is providing the accurate data you need for a safer, more efficient drive.
