What You'll Need:
-
Your tire pressure gauge (digital, dial, or pencil).
-
Your vehicle's recommended PSI (found on a sticker inside the driver's door jamb or in the owner's manual—not on the tire itself!).
Step-by-Step Guide:
-
Check Cold Tires: For the most accurate reading, check your tires when they are "cold," meaning the car has been parked for at least three hours.
-
Remove the Valve Cap: Unscrew the plastic cap on the tire's valve stem and keep it in a safe place.
-
Press the Gauge onto the Valve Stem: Firmly press the gauge's opening onto the valve stem. You might hear a brief hiss of air—this is normal.
-
Get the Reading:
-
Digital: The reading will appear on the screen instantly.
-
Dial (Analog):: The needle will point to the pressure.
-
Pencil (Stick):: A measured stick will pop out of the barrel. The number closest to the barrel is your PSI.
-
-
Recheck: It's a good habit to take the reading 2-3 times for accuracy.
-
Replace the Cap: Screw the valve cap back on to keep dirt and moisture out.
It's that simple! Make this a monthly habit.
