Tire sealants can be a useful tool for protecting against small punctures, but they require proper use to avoid damage. Sealants work by plugging small holes (≤¼ inch) as you drive, preventing air loss and allowing you to reach a repair shop. They’re ideal for emergency situations and off-road driving, where punctures are common. However, avoid overusing sealants—they can clog TPMS sensors, imbalance tires, and hide larger damage that needs professional repair. Choose sealants designed for your tire type (tubeless vs. tube-type) and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for application. After using a sealant, have the tire professionally inspected and repaired as soon as possible—sealants are temporary fixes, not permanent solutions. For sidewall punctures or large holes, sealants are ineffective and can worsen damage. By using sealants wisely, you address small issues quickly while avoiding long-term tire harm.
