Torque Wrench Mistakes That Ruin Car Parts (And How to Fix Them)

Even small torque errors can damage your car—here are the top mistakes and solutions:

· Over-Tightening Oil Pan Plugs: Cranking past the spec (18–25 ft-lbs) warps the pan, causing leaks. Fix: Use a torque wrench and stop at the first click. If you stripped the plug, install a oversized repair plug (available at auto parts stores).

· Ignoring Wheel Lug Sequence: Tightening lugs in a circle (not star pattern) leads to uneven pressure, warping brake rotors. Fix: Follow your car’s manual—most use a 5-lug star pattern (1→3→5→2→4).

· Using Extensions Without Adjustment: A 6-inch extension reduces torque by ~5%. Fix: If you need an extension, add 5% to your set torque (e.g., 90 ft-lbs becomes 94.5 ft-lbs) or use a torque adapter.
